Windcatcher X-Air – Monodraught (2010)
The Windcatcher natural ventilation system channels a controlled quantity of fresh air into a room from roof level without mechanical assistance. The aims of the X-air project were to redesign the Classic GRP Windcatcher to improve system design, introduce component standardisation, reduce costs and improve efficiency.
The final system features Monodraught’s patented Active Louvre system to eliminate water ingress and solar powered LED architectural lighting. The Windcatcher X-Air halved the original cost of the system and doubled performance. The product was awarded ‘highly commended’ status at the 2011 HVR awards reaching the final four for sustainable product of the year.
I worked as part of a small team, responsible for the entire project from initial concepts through to manufacture, material selection and supporting sales information. The chosen concept was developed with rapid prototyping, supporting calculations, smoke testing and meetings with manufacturers. We were also able to utilise Monodraught’s in house CFD experts to gain critical design feedback.
